  1. 1A01: duck and rollie 2006 model of brekdown1. breakdown- one partner is dissatisfied 'i cant stand this'
    2. intra-psychic processes- brooding on faults
    3. dyadic processes- People confront their partners and discuss their feelings and the future
    4. social stage- seeking support, the third party may help dissolution
    5. grave dressing- Partner construct a representation of the failed relationship that avoids putting them in an unfavourable light
    6. resurrection- reflect on mistakes and start to prepare themselves for new relationships
  2. 2A02: tashiro and frazier 2003-surveyed undergraduates who have recently broken up with a romantic partner. They typically reported that they experienced emotional distress and personal growth. Breaking up with their partner had given them insights to themselves and a clever idea about future partners (resurrection process)
  3. 3AO2: Akert 1998-partners who initiated the breakup found it less upsetting and stressful
-those who did not initiate, tended to be most miserable, experienced loneliness and unhappiness
  4. 4IDA: RWA-duck believes that if we pay attention to how couples talk, we can intervene before a breakup progresses
-for example, in the intra-psychic stage, they might be encouraged to think about their partners strengths and reflect on their own contribution to the problem
-but, if people are in the social stage, they may have already omitted to leaving
  5. 5A01: duck 1999- reasons for breakdown1. lack of skills- Some people lack interpersonal skills to make relationships mutually satisfying. These include being poor conversationalist and poor at indicating interests in others. this also includes sex
    2. lack of stimulation- they find the partner boring and have nothing in common. People expect relationships to develop and grow and when they do not this is enough cause to break it off.
    3. maintenance difficulties- Although enduring romantic relationships can survive the strain of long distance relationships, evidence has dominantly shown that distance can put a strain on relationships as well as long working hours
  6. 6A02: duck 1991- social skillspartner perceives them as being disinterested because they dont want to 'relate'
  7. 7A02: baxter 1994- stimulation-There is evidence that boredom or belief that the relationship is not going anywhere is often the reason used when breaking up (Baxter 1994).
  8. 8A02: shaver et al 1985- maintenancegoing to uni caused strains and led to break ups
but this was in the 1980 when people had fewer ways of commuting
  9. 9A02: holt and stone- maintenance-Despite this long distant relationships are increasingly common in our society. They found there was little decrease in relationship satisfaction provided that lovers are able to reunite regularly. This suggests that people use different management strategies to successfully maintain long-distance relationships
  10. 10IDA: RWA Cina et al-The importance of social skills deficits in relationship breakdown has led to the development of training programmes to enhance relationship skills. Cina et al, compared couples who had had received relationship skill training with those who did not. The ‘trained’ couples later reported much higher marital quality compared to couples in the control group.
