Anti-social behaviour
Flashcards do conjunto (25)
- 1What is instrumental aggression?Aggression that is a means to achieve a specific end
- 2What is hostile aggression?Aggression that is motivated to do harm to another person for the sake of it.
- 3What is reactive aggression?Aggression to others that have hurt me
- 4What is relational aggression?Aggression towards/that affects relationships or social status
- 5How does Rousseau view aggression?Aggression is a by-product of the inherent social pathology in our society
- 6How does Freud view aggression? We are born with a death instinct called Thantos, and society serves to harness/neutralise it.
- 7Catharsis or learned behaviour. Freud:Freud argues for catharsis, as well as the idea that violent tendencies cannot be curbed, but can be channeled into harmless activities, such as sports.
- 8Define catharsis. The therapeutic way in which violent impulses may be vented vicariously.
- 9Catharsis or learned behaviour. SLT:Learned behaviour. Witnessing aggressive behaviour legitimises it. a positively reinforced or negatively reinforced behaviour combine to 'teach' a child to engage in similar behaviour.
- 10What were the findings of the Bobo doll study?Children who witnessed aggression displayed aggression. Exposure to violence instigated violence in the children, and therefore violence breeds more violence.
- 11What are some limitations of the Bobo doll study?1) Just because they follow the acts of adults doesn't mean that they will imitate actors on TV.
2) They may beat up the doll, but we can't assume that they would replicate this on another person. - 12What did Eron's longitudinal study find?Age 8 - predicted by SLT.
Age 19 - violence watched not related to their behaviour, but to their violence at 8
Age 30 - more criminal convictions, more likely to beat their wife and kids, more driving and traffic convictions. - 13What are the implications of Eron's longitudinal study?Sensitive period - 8-12 years. Period in development when learning of a certain kind readily takes place. Personality formation is highly susceptible to experiences.
- 14Criticisms of Eron's study?Chicken-egg-effect - not causality - did they watch more violent TV because they were already violent, or did the TV make them violent?
- 15What was found when children were shown the lack of realism in TV violence? Those who wrote about that, instead of what they did last summer, showed a marked reduction in their aggressive behaviour over the ensuing 4 months. Relationship between TV violence watching and violent behaviour disappeared .
- 16What did Stein and Fredrick find?Children watched TV shows for 4 weeks, half watched violent ones. Those who watched violence became more violent. Observers didn't know who watched watch to avoid observer bias.
- 17What did Thomas et al find?TV violence can have an insidious effect. Children who watched violent TV had less of an emotional reaction to watching a fight; legitimises and desensitise.
- 18What effect does background TV have, even when it isn't watched directly?Children still displayed more violence. Perhaps due to less time spent of focused activity that would benefit the child's development.
- 19Parental influences on aggression?- Parents altruistic behaviour
- Corporal punishment
- Control of child's emotional and psychological development - relational aggression. - 20How is frustration linked to aggression?e.g. kids having to wait a long time after being told they could play with toys started throwing them around etc.
- 21Is frustration an inevitable consequence of frustration? No! Kids who were not allowed a cash prize bc of a peer displayed little aggression when they were given a reason.
- 22Does attention seeking link to aggression?yes! Nursery kids who were given attention for good behaviour and not aggressive - aggressive behaviour substantially diminished. Also seems to be linked to psychological rejection e.g. from classmates.
- 23Does gender effect aggression?Probably not?? Most investigate on bois, but those that do study both sexes the results aren't significantly different. Seems to be just as susceptible to influencing factors. Also rising crime stats for girls.
- 24Media influence?Yes probably. Things like exposure to violent video games and songs lyrics have results as predicted. e.g. colombine massacre and doom.
- 25Media criticisms?Cause-effect again. However, preference/exposure to violent media is significant in predicting subsequent violent behaviour.
