Resumo de Recurso
Omnipotence- paradox of the stone
OMNIPOTENCE
ST ANSLEM-PROSLOGION
god is that which no greater can be concieved
early christian philosopher
uses rational deduction
maixmally great being
limited to logic
RENE DESCARTES-MEDITATIONS
god is supremely perfect
famous french philosopher
not restricted by logic
famous french philosopher
important in imoortance of gods existence/concept of existence
using rational deduction
god is an unlimited being
both use rational deduction/a-posteriori reasoning
god is an innate idea
not learned
we can clearly percieve
gods atributes self evident= demonstratable using logical thinking
both-->maximal greatness/perfection= definite aspect
both prove existence of god using ontological argument
PARADOX OF THE STONE
THOMAS AQUINAS-SUMMA THEOLOGICA
god can do all possible things (like anslem said)
logically possible power
reocognises cant make circle square
DESCARTES-MEDITATIONS
unlimited power
god is supremely perfect
because what we percieve true/possible in the world can be doubted
we can only be sure of own+gods existence
1) either god can create a stone which god cant lift, or god cant create a stone which god cant lift
2) if god can create a stone twhich god cant lift, then, necessarily, there is at least one task which god cant perform= lift the stone
3) if god cant create a stone which god cant lift, then, necessarily, there is at least one task which god cant perform= create the stone
4) hence, there is at least one task which god cant perform
5) if god is an omnipotent being, then god can perform any task
6) god is not omnipotent
GEORGE MAVRODES-SOME PUZZLES CONCERNING OMNIPOTENCE
2 solutions
premise 1 faulty= assumes possibility of something logically impossible --> self-contradictory
thiest (religious) dont have to prove the contradiction
premise 3 faulty
can say yes to p.2= god can create this stone--> can create a stone that god cant lift
WADE SAVAGE-PARADOX OF THE STONE
disagrees with maverodes 1st solution= paradox meant to self contradictory to show that omnipotent being dont exist
maverodes wrong to assume omnipotent being can exist in order to argue that an omnipotent being does exist
= "begging the question"
disagrees with p.3
double negative
god cant create something he cant lift = god can create something he can lift
no limitation on gods power
to show concept of omnipotent is incoherent
