Lecture 2: MSM
Law of repetition:
- More rehearsal leads to better retention
Process of a memory:
- 1) Acqusition/encoding 2) Storage - held temporarily in the HC, integrated into the cortical networks 3) Retrival/remembering
Sensory Store:
- Unattended info lost quickly, only held for milliseconds, fills in blanks for intermittent stimuli - doesn't require attention
- Types: iconic - vision, echoic - hearing, haptic - touch, olfactory - smell, gustatory - taste
- Sperling (study) -iconic memory - grid using 3x4 letters - report either partial or full (got performance by sum of average performance on each row) -> capacity = large amount in iconic, perhaps everything, duration = about 250-500ms - info decays rapidly after
- Darwin - echoic memory - same set up as Sperling but with headphones -> partial report better than whole, but had longer retention = 2-4s
STM:
- Conscious processing of info, attention is key (like a spotlight) - limits what is looked at, Capacity = 7(+/-2) however can chunk meaningful info together into single unit, duration around 15s if not rehearsed, frontal lobes involved
Interference:
- Proactive = prev trials generate interference, gradual decline in performance
- Retroactive - if new material interferes backwards, e.g. second lagnuage
LTM:
- Organises and stores info into different systems, rehearsal needed for transfer from STM->LTM, capacity and duration unknown/unlimited(?), involves temporal and frontal lobes
Serial position effect:
- Shows difference between LTM/STM, recency effect = better memory for last items on a list, primacy effect = better memory for first few items on the list
