key concepts
- input
- when the information goes into the brain
- encode
- change into a format the brain understands.
- retrieval
- getting from storage
- output
- use the information in real life.
- storage
- putting it into a safe place for later use
- input
amnesia
- retrograde
- forget everything before
- In the frontal lobe
- anterograde
- hippocampal regeins
- unable to form new memories
- motor skills
- responsible for every day things
- cerebellum
- retrograde
multistore model
- short term memory
- 7 (+/- 2 chucks)
- holds it for 10-20 seconds
- maintenance rehearsal
- rehearse for over 20 seconds for it to move into LTM
- displacement- information is shuttered out because there isn't enough room
- long term memory
- unlimited capacity
- unlimited duration
- decay- when information is forgotten and replaced
- sensory store
- everything in immediate surroundings
- only for 3seconds
- rehearsal
- pay attention for about 20 seconds for it to mate to STM
- criticisms
- the role of maintenance rehearsal is over exaggerated as you don't have to rehearse things like weddings as there meaning full and go straight into LTM.
- STM and LTM could have been split into sections to help organise the information instead of it been all in one place. For example STM could be split into 2 sections past and present or important and non important.
- it does not apply to all people for example anyone who has memory problem could only remember about 2 chunks of information instead of 9-11. this could also go the other way in people having amazing memory and remember about 15 chunks e.g Derren brown.
- short term memory
Cive Wering
- how it came about and what he developed
- He was a musician.
- he started having headache
- he had a viral infection
- attacked his central nervous system
- he had a viral infection at the start
- got both types of amnesia
- criticisms
- its a longitudinal case study which means it happened over a log period of time so it is hard to recreate and things can change over time
- it is very unreliable because no one has ever had this sever type of amnesia which means we cannot apply this as we don't know how females or kids or elderly people will react to this type or amnesia
- the researcher can get to attached because they were there all the way through the study for 28 years and might be too kind so then lie because they feel sorry for Clive and lie to feel better
- results
- viral infections can lead to amnesia
- it is possible to have both types of amnesia
- he claimed he was unconscious as a coping strategy
- he could only remember music and he had kids but no idea who
- he would fall to sleep and never remember waking up
- process
- how it came about and what he developed
