Main causes of collectivisation

1. Economic

   • NEP failing
   • Falling living standards for urban workers
   • current farming methods inefficient

2. Ideological

   • NEP allowed free market capitalism which was not a communist idea!
   • Hoped that collectivisation would awaken their revolutionary spirit
     • They were currently working for their benefit, not the state

3. Political

   • Right wing argued NEP and suggested importing grain but this meant less money for industry
   • Stalin used it to win support from the left (who wanted rapid industry) and isolate Bukharin
