- 1Reber (1967)Participants who were given a string of letters created by an artificial grammar could identify the whether new strings were grammatical or not, and could not describe the rules of grammar. They had implicit memory.

- 10The Activation ViewPriming seen on indirect tests is due to the temporary activation of pre-existing representations. This activation occurs automatically. No contextual information is available that would make the item appear as part of an episode.
- 11The Bias ViewPrior presentation of an item can bias subsequent processing of the item on later presentations.
- 12Tulving et al. (1982)Found a dissociation because the independent variable (retention interval) affected the direct and indirect measures differently.
