- 2What is the circulatory system? The system that carries materials around the body.
- 3What does the circulatory system consists of?- Heart
- Blood vessels
- Blood - 4What are the three different types of blood vessels in your body?- Arteries
- Capillaries
- Veins - 5What is an artery?A blood vessel that carries blood away from the heart.

- 6What happens if the artery is cut?The high pressure within in it causes blood to spurt out very quickly.
- 7What is a pulse? The regular expansion and contraction of the arteries in response to the heartbeat.

- 8What are capillaries? The narrowest type of blood vessel.

- 9How thick are capillary walls?1 cell thick.

- 10What are veins? The blood vessels that carries blood back to the heart.

- 11What is a thrombus?A blood clot.

- 12How are bruises formed?Tiny capillaries near the skin burst and the blood leaks out into the surrounding tissue. After that a red mark appears when blood has leaked into a tissue.

- 13How large is your heart?About the size of your fist.

- 14Where is your heart situated in?In the middle of your chest, behind the breastbone.
- 15What type of muscle is your heart made out of?Cardiac muscle.

- 16Why is the circulatory system referred to as a double system? There are two separate circuits through which blood flows.
- 17What happens in one circuit?- Blood flows from the heart to the body and back to the heart.
- Carries nutrients and oxygen to the cells and carbon dioxide and waste away from the cells. - 18What happens in the second circuit?Blood flows from the heart to the lungs and back.
- 19What is deoxygenated blood?Blood with very little oxygen and lots of carbon dioxide.

- 20What is oxygenated blood?Blood rich in oxygen.

- 21Why should oxygenated and deoxygenated blood be separate where the two circuits meet in the heart? So the circulatory system works?
- 22What is the septum? The thick wall that divides the heart in two.

- 23What does one half of the heart collect?Oxygenated blood.
- 24What does the other half collect?Deoxygenated blood.
- 25What are the three main phases of a heartbeat?1. The 2 atria contract, pushing blood down into the ventricles.
2. The ventricles contract, forcing blood out of the heart to the body and lungs.
3. The heart muscle relaxes and the atria fills with blood
- 26What does ECG stand for?Electrocardiogram.

- 27What is a plaque?A mixture of cholesterol, calcium and fibrin that can build up on the inside of arteries and reduce blood flow to the heart.

- 28What is angina?Severe chest pain caused by lack of oxygen being supplied to heart muscle.

- 29What is cholesterol?A fatty chemical that can cause blockages in arteries.

- 30What are 4 things found in blood?- Red blood cells
- White blood cells
