Cards in this deck (11)
- 1CapacityHow much information is stored in memory. This varies with the memory store, for example, 7 +/- 2 items in short term memory and an unlimited amount in long term memory.
- 2DurationRefers to how long a piece of information is retained in memory. This is believed to be approximately 15-30 seconds in STM and for an unlimited time in LTM.
- 3EncodingRefers to how information is coded into the memory system. In SM is it believed to be both acoustic (according to sound) and visual (according to sight) whilst in STM it is mainly visual and then in LTM is semantic/ coded according to it's meaning.
- 4Eye witness TestimonyExamines if memory for important events such as crimes are accurate, or if errors are made when recalling such information, for example, whether these memories are distorted by leading questions.
- 5Long Term MemoryAccording to Atkinson and Shiffrin's multistore model of memory the LTM is a memory store which processes information according to it's meaning (semantically) and which holds an unlimited amount for a lengthy period of time. Information for LTM flows from the STM.
- 6Multistore Model Of MemoryA model of memory proposed by Atkinson and Shiffrin which assumes that there are 3 separate memory stores (SM, STM & LTM), that information must flow from one store to the next and that information can only be retained in STM if rehearsal has taken place.
- 7Reconstructive MemoryBecause we hold schemas of information (building blocks of knowledge) when information is recalled it tends to be distorted because we change it to fit into these existing schemas and therefore expectations lead us to reconstructive memories.
- 8Sensory MemoryIs the initial memory store into which all visual and acoustic information from the environment enters the memory system to be be further processed or discarded.
- 9SchemaThis is a building blocks of knowledge derived from previous experience and subsequent expectations and they're formed from early childhood.
- 10Short Term MemoryAccording to Atkinson and Shiffrin's multistore model of memory the STM is a memory store which processes information visually (according to sight) and acoustically (according to sound) and which holds a limited amount (7 +/2 items) for a short period of time (15-30 seconds) unless rehearsal occurs. Information for STM flows from the SM and then into the LTM
- 11Working Memory ModelA model of memory proposed by Baddeley & Hitch to replace the concept of STM. It proposes instead separate stores of memory, controlled by a central executive, which are responsible for processing auditory and visual data. The CE is an internal system which has a limited capacity and is involved in decision making, together with the two slave systems (the articulatory- phonological loop and the visuo-spatial scratch pad). This model is concerned with both active processing and the brief storage of info.
