Digestion and absorption

Erin Boseley AS Biology AS - Level English 18 cards

Cards in this deck (18)

  1. 1What reaction breaks down larger biological molecules?Hydrolysis
  2. 2What does amylase do?Catalyses the breakdown of starch into maltose, by breaking the glycosidic bonds
  3. 3Where is amylase produced?Salivary glands and pancreas
  4. 4Where is amylase used?Mouth and small intestine
  5. 5What are membrane-bound disaccharides?Enzymes attached to the cell membranes of epithelial cells
  6. 6What enzyme catalyses the break down of starch?Amylase
  7. 7What enzyme catalyses the breakdown of lipids?Lipase
  8. 8What do lipase enzymes do?Catalyse the breakdown of lipids by hydrolysing the ester bonds
  9. 9Where is lipase created?Pancreas
  10. 10Where is lipase used?Small intestine
  11. 11What are bile salts?Salts produced by the liver to emulsify lipids
  12. 12What enzymes catalyse the breakdown of proteins?Endopeptideases, exopeptideases and dipeptideases
  13. 13What do endopeptideases do?They hydrolyse peptide bonds within a protein
  14. 14What do exopeptideases do?They hydrolyse peptide bonds at the end of proteins and remove single amino acids from proteins
  15. 15What do dipeptideases do?Specifically hydrolyse the peptide bond in a depeptide
  16. 16How are monosaccharides absorbed?By active transport with sodium ions, via a co-transporter protein
  17. 17How are monoglycerides and fatty acids absorbed? They diffuse directly across the epithelial cell membrane
  18. 18How are amino acids absorbed? They diffuse via sodium-dependent transport proteins
