Flashcards
CASE STUDIES & CONTENT ANALYSIS
Cards in this deck (8)
- 1Outline case studiesAn in-depth investigation, description and analysis of a single (usually unusual) individual/group/institution/event
Usually produces qualitative data
Researchers construct case history
PPT may also be subject to psychological testing - quantitative data
Studies tend to be longitudinal - 2Outline content analysisPeople are studied indirectly via the communication they have produced e.g. texts, emails, other media
- 3Outline codingQuantitative data
Large data sets are categorised into meaningful units
Furnham & Farragher (2000) - TV adverts; examined to see how often men and women are depicted in 'professional roles' or 'familial roles' - 4Outline thematic analysisAn inductive and qualitative approach to analysis that involves identifying implicit or explicit ideas within the data
Theme = recurring idea, likely to be descriptive
Once the researcher is satisfied that the themes cover most aspects of the data, they may collect new data to test the validity of the themes - 5Outline strengths of case studiesOffers rich, detailed insights that may shed light or very unusual behaviour
May contribute to our understanding of 'normal' functioning e.g. HM demonstrated 'normal' memory processing
May generate hypotheses for future study and one solidarity, contradictory instance may lead to the revision of an entire theory - 6Outline limitations of case studiesLack of generalisability - small sample size
Information that makes the final report is based on the subjective selection and interpretation of the researcher
Accounts from peers prone to inaccuracy and memory decay - low validity - 7Outline strengths of content analysisCircumnavigates ethical issues
Material used already in public domain and no issues with permission
Communication of a more 'dubious'/sensitive nature still has high external validity
Flexible - produces both quantitative and qualitative data - 8Outline limitations of content analysisData analysed out of the context in which it was produced.
Researcher may attribute opinions to the speaker/writer that weren't intended originally
Many modern analysts use reflexivity
However, content analysis may still suffer from a lack of objectivity
