Cards in this deck (11)

  1. 1Miller (1956)'Chunking'- by grouping numbers or letters together, it makes them easier to remember.
    Miller said that the capacity of the STM is 7+-2
  2. 2Joseph Jacobs (1887)Tested to see how much information the STM can hold, and found that it holds 5-9 items.
    Found that digits were recalled better than letters.
  3. 3Glanzer and Cunitz (1966)Introduced the interference task- once you had been shown new information you would have a distraction so you cannot rehease it, then you recall it to see how much you remembered.
  4. 4Conrad (1964)Encoding in the STM- found that letters that sounded the same (even though they was presented visually) there wasd errors made eg. s was reccalled instead of x.
  5. 5Baddeley (1966)Compare the encoding in the STM and the LTM (the way that it is encoded)
  6. 6Brown, Peterson and Peterson (1959)Stuidy how long information stays in the STM whenh it is not rehearsed. Rapid icrease in forgetting from STM as the delay was increased.
  7. 7Posner (1969)Contradictory evidence, expanded Baddeley's theory.
  8. 8Hitch and Baddeley (1976)Questioned existance of a single STM store. Used the Working Memory Model to describe the STM in more detail.
  9. 9Bahrick et al (1975)Duration of the Very LTM- to see if memories could last over decades.
    Used an opportunity sample.
    Recognition was better than free recall.
  10. 10Standing et al (1970)Capacity of LTM
    Showed pps 2560 pictures over a number of days. Pps remembered 90% of the pictures.
  11. 11Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968)Multi-Store Model of Memory
    Retreive
    SM=STM=LTM
    Attension Reheasal
