Flashcards

Muscular system

Hannah Cardno Anatomy and Physiology English 12 cards

Cards in this deck (12)

  1. 1What are the three main type of muscle tissue?Skeletal, Cardiac and Smooth
  2. 2What is the perimysium?Layer of dense irregular connective tissue that surrounds groups of 10 to 100 (or more) muscle fibres. Separates groups of muscle fibres into bundles called fascicles.
  3. 3What generates the striated or striped appearance in some muscle tissue? The arrangement of myofibrils within the sarcomere generate alternating dark (A bands) and light (I bands) which generate the striped (straited) appearance.
  4. 4What is the smallest contractile unit in the muscle fibre?Sarcomere
  5. 5Name the two contractile proteins in skeltal muscle?Actin (thin filament) and Myosin (thick filament)
  6. 6What are Transverse Tubules (T-Tubules)?Tiny invaginations of the sarcolemma that tunnel in from the sarcolemma toward the centre of each muscle fibre
  7. 7What type of nerve cells innervate (stimulate) skeletal muscle?Somatic motor neurons
  8. 8What is the neurotransmitter that triggers a muscle action potential?Acetylcholine released at the neuromuscular junction
  9. 9What is rigor mortis?State of partial contraction of muscles after death due to lack of ATP. Myosin heads remain attached to actin, preventing relaxation.
  10. 10Name the connective tissue layer covering individual muscle fibre?Endomysium
  11. 11What is the function of the regulatory proteins troponin and tropomyosin?Regulate contraction of muscle by modulating cross-bridges formation
  12. 12What is the cation that stimulates that binds to troponin during muscle contraction?Ca2+ (Calcium)
