Chapter 9: The Ponds

  1. Walden Pond

    • Sometimes blue, sometimes green
    • not a lot of aquatic life
    • provides water for Thoreau
    • provides a place to wash dishes for the villagers
  2. One day Thoreau finds tracks around the pond which he believes were made by hunters.

    • According to an Indian legend, a hill sank and swallows up a group of hunters except one named Walden which is what the pond is named after.
  3. Sandy Pond

    • larger and more shallow, less pure, and has more fish then Walden Pond
    • Thoreau finds the name boring and describes how the pond should be named from the animals that lived there and not the farmers who lived there
  4. White Pond

    • has the same features as Walden Pond
  5. Goose Pond

    • similar to Walden and much smaller with no boat and fish
