3 Processes of the Respiratory System

  1. Ventilation

    • Inhalation/Inspiration = Breathing IN
    • Exhalation/Expiration = Breathing OUT
  2. Gas Exchange

    • What is it?
      • Movement of gases in and out of the body.
      • 2 Way Process
        • Waste Gases OUT
          • By Diffusion.
        • Oxygen (O2) IN
  3. Internal Respiration (Cell Respiration)

    • Anaeroboic
      • NO Oxygen
        • Muscle Cells SHORTCUT the Respiration process.
          • But Makes LACTIC ACID (poisonous)
            • e.g Runners pant after a race, to get rid of Lactic Acid, with EXTRA Oxygen. Or they get cramp.
              • OXYGEN DEBT
                • Extra Oxygen needed to break down the Lactic Acid. Even after exercise, when heart rate is still high and breathing rate is still high.
                • LACTIC ACID + OXYGEN ----> CARBON DIOXIDE + WATER
          • GLUCOSE ----> LACTIC ACID + ENERGY
    • Aerobic
      • USING OXYGEN, to release energy
        • GLUCOSE + OXYGEN ----> CARBON DIOXIDE + WATER + ENERGY
      • OXYGEN DIFFUSES into the MITOCHONDRIA, where the process takes place.
