Case studies

  1. Practical

    • In-depth, detailed insight to unique and special cases that are often overlooked in large scale research
      • Difficult to find appropriate case to suit topic
    • Easier to study sensitive topics, simplify complex concepts
      • Can be very time consuming, especially over a number of years
    • Expose participant to real life situation
      • Sample attrition- the participant no longer wants to be involved
    • Valid- 1st hand
      • Not reliable- can't collect that same data again
  2. Ethical

    • Rapport with the participant, make them feel comfortable to discuss sensitive topics
      • Sensitive topics cause psychological harm to vulnerable groups
    • Respondent validation- check deceitfulness
    • Participant can give pseudonym name to ensure confidentiality
      • Often intrusive in their life
    • Brief and debrief participant
      • Socially desirable answer/ observer effect
  3. Theoretical

    • Interpretivists like this- qualitative data
    • Reflexive, respondent validation, rapport established
      • Not representative, reliable or scientific
    • Data rich in depth- valid
      • Not objective
