Atoms

  1. Atomic Number is the bottom number

    • Number of protons (positive)
      • Number of electrons (negative)
  2. Atoms have protons neutrons and electrons

    • The nucleus is located at the center
      • Its made of protons and neutrons
    • Electrons move around the nucleus
    • The neutrons in the atom have no charge,
  3. Mass number equals the top number

    • Its the sum of the protons and neutrons
      • The number of neutrons is the difference between the mass and the atomic number
  4. Isotopes are the ones which have a different number of neutrons. They have the same atomic number, but a different mass number

  5. When atoms join together, they form compounds

    • You can take, give away or share electrons.
      • Metals and non-metals compounds consist of ions
        • Covalent bonding
        • Ionic bonding
  6. Elements are atoms which have the same atomic number

    • They are 100 different elements
    • The number of protons tells what atom it is.
      • They can have a different number of electrons or neutrons but not protons.
    • They are represented in the periodic table.
