Mind map: Specialised cells

Map content

Specialised Cells

  1. Leaf Cell

    • Function - Absorbs light energy for photosynthesis
    • Adaption
      • Packed with chloroplasts
      • Regular shaped
      • Closely packed cells form a continuous layer for afficient absorption of sunlight
  2. Root Hair Cell

    • Function - Absorbs water and mineral ions from the soil
    • Adaption
      • Long 'finger-like' process with very thin wall, which gives a large surface area
  3. Sperm Cell

    • Function - Fertilises an egg cell - female gamete
    • Adaption
      • Head contains genetic information and an enzyme help to penetrate the egg cell membrane
      • Middle section is packed with mitochondria for energy
      • The tail moves the sperm to the egg
  4. Red Blood Cell

    • Function - Contains haemoglobin to carry oxygen to the cells
    • Adaption
      • Thin outer membrane to let oxygen diffuse through easily
      • Shape increases the surface area to allow more oxgyen to be abdorbed efficiently
      • No nucleus, so the whole cell is full of haemoglobin
