The classical time modalities—past, present, and future—all play a role in the different categories of time. The past lies behind us, the present is a momentary time point that is so short-lasting that it almost does not exist, and the future lies ahead of us. In chronological time, these separations are well defined, and there is no crosstalk between modalities. In autobiographical time, though, the three time modalities interplay to prescribe significance to certain events over others.
