The article I chose was Collaborative Learning. The article discusses using collaborative learning and direct instruction. Research was done to determine how the different methods affected students' decision-making skills, and supported the students' ability to transfer knowledge to different topics. Collaborative learning is student-led learning where the students initiate discussions, creations, and decision-making. The teacher is more of a facilitator in this type of learning. With direct instruction, the teacher leads the class and individual work is the main focal point. The teacher makes the decisions in this type of learning environment.
The study that was conducted consisted of 764 fifth-graders from 36 different classrooms in 8 different schools in two urban districts in the Midwest. The students were from low-income families. The majority were African American or Hispanic ethnicity. The students were then broken up into 3 groups. One group used collaborative learning, the second group used direct instruction, and the third group was the control group.
