Affect Theory (Byrne & Clore) Based on classical & operant conditioning
Formation Rewards in a relationship reinforce positive emotions e.g.
happiness (affect component)
If these rewards are maintained then the relationship will last. If the rewards no longer provide pleasure the relationship is likely to end. Level of affect can fluctuate with life events e.g. having a child may change rewards
Classical conditioning - attracted to people who are associated with pleasant events
