Parts of a microscope-
Eyepiece- for the viewer to look to see the specimen
Objective lens- collects the light coming through the sample magnifies it
Mirror- allows to t the light and illuminate the specimen
Condensor lens - used to focus light on the specimen
Revolving nose piece- holds the objective lens in place
Iris diaphragm- controls the amount of light that reaches the aperture
Stage- the platform where you place the slide
Slide- a flat piece of glass used to hold the specimen in place
Adjustment knobs ( coarse and fine )- for focusing and fine-tuning
Coverslip- to keep the specimen flat and avoid evaporation

Meanings -
Cytoplasm- It is a substance that fills the cell. It is found inside the cell membrane surrounding the cell nucleus.
Cell wall- It protects the cell membrane.
Page 3
Slide Preparation-
Place the specimen on the slide
Add a drop of staining specimen to the slide. ex- safranin, methylene blue
Cover the specimen with a coverslip
Important- safranin is used for plant cells and methylene blue for animal cells

Steps to adjust the microscope-
Adjust illuminator mirror to get maximum light
Rotate low power objective into place
Place the slide onto the stage - centre the specimen over the hole in the stage. Secure the slide with stage clips
Look through the eyepiece and turn the coarse adjustment knob until the specimen comes clearly into view. Adjust slide if necessary. Use fine adjustment knob for fine-tuning
