What is imperialism?

Control of a weaker area by a stronger one

Can be military (Opium Wars), economic (Britain and U.S. in Latin America - ironic example, since they just won independence), political (Britain in India), or otherwise

What are some types of imperialism?

Settler Colonies/Neo-Europes (most;y 1840s-1900)

Relatively small native population

Temperate (mild) climate

e.g. Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and more...

Australia - discovered in 1770 by James Cook; first settled in 1788 - over 1000 settlers including over 700 convicts (1/4 to 1/3 of convicts were women) - meant as a penal colony; but also to farm and find minerals and other resources

1788-1868 as a penal colony

Many, even after released could not afford to pay for their return trip, so they stayed and settled land as farmers

New Imperialism - Main type meant by "imperialism"

Africa and Asia in the mid-1800s through early 1900s
