cHEMISTRY rEVIEW AND ISOTOPES

Matter- is composed of atoms, it is anything that has mass and occupies spaces

Atoms are composed of small particles:

Table 1: Basic Characteristics of the subatomic particles

Subatomic Charges Location Mass (atomic mass)

Particles

Protons Positive (+) In the nucleus aprox. 1.04 u

Neutrons Neutral (-) In the nucleus aprox 1.04 u

Electrons Negative (-) outside the nucleus aprox, 0.0054 u

Nucleus

models are not perfect

nucleus found is EXTREMELY small

atoms mostly empty space

electrons don't orbit around the nucleus

Found somewhere within a discrete volume of space called an orbital

ISOTOPES

ISOTOPES = an element that has the same number of protons (atomic #) but different number of neutrons (atomic mass)

Tin has the most amount of isotopes

isotopes have the same atomic number (chemical properties) just different masses
