Atoms - Chemistry

Atoms:

The Nucleus:

- Centre of the atom.

- Contains PROTONS and NEUTRONS.

- Due to the protons it has a positive charge.

- Nearly the whole mass of the atom is concentrated in the nucleus.

The Electrons:

- Move AROUND the nucleus.

- NEGATIVELY CHARGED.

- Cover a large amount of space, despite small size.

- Practically no mass.

- They're arranged in SHELLS around the NUCLEUS.

Protons - Heavy and positively charged.

Neutrons - Heavy and neutral.

Electrons - Tiny and negatively charged.

~The charge on the electrons is the same size as the protons, except opposite.

~ When an atom becomes charged it is then called an ion.

~ There are the same amount of neutrons as protons.
