Biology - Aerobic respiration flashcards

rahateley1 Biology GCSE English 11 cards

Cards in this deck (11)

  1. 1Aerobic and anaerobic respirationLets revise!
  2. 2What is aerobic respiration?Aerobic respiration is the form of respiration which uses oxygen.
  3. 3What is the equation?glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water (+ energy)
  4. 4Where do most of the reactions happen in animal and plant cells?Mitochondria, tiny objects inside the cytoplasm of the cell. The reactions are controlled by enzymes.
  5. 5How is the energy used by the organism? It may be used to build up larger molecules from smaller ones. For example:
    - Plants make amino acids from sugars, nitrates and other nutrients
    - These amino acids are then built up into larger molecules - proteins
  6. 6How is the energy used by animals? To enable the muscles to contract so that the animals can move.
  7. 7Why does the heart rate increase during exercise? To supply more oxygen and glucose to the respiring cells
  8. 8Why does anaerobic respiration occur during hard exercise? There may be insufficient oxygen supplied to the muscle cells
  9. 9What substance is glucose stored as in the muscles?Glycogen
  10. 10What is anaerobic respiration? The incomplete breakdown of glucose.
  11. 11What is the equation?glucose → lactic acid (+ little energy)
