Elise Lambert Psychology AS - Level English 15 cards

Cards in this deck (15)

  1. 1What two psychologists did animal studies to measure attachment?Lorenz and Harlow
  2. 2What did Lorenz want to find out?Wanted to study the phenomenon of imprinting
  3. 3What was the procedure of Lorenz's study?randomly divided a clutch of goose eggs. Half the eggs were hatched with their mother, and half in an incubator where the first moving object they saw was Lorenz.
  4. 4What were the findings of Lorenz's study?the incubator group followed lorenz everywhere.
  5. 5What is this called?Imprinting
  6. 6What is meant by the critical period?a period of time where imprinting needs to take place. Depending on species this can vary
  7. 7What did Lorenz find out about sexual imprinting? He also found that the thing an animal imprints on, is often the one they show sexual behaviour towards
  8. 8What is a limitation of Lorenz's study?there is a problem in generalizing findings from birds and ducks to humans. Human attachment seems to be quite different from that of birds
  9. 9What is another limitation of Lorenz's study?Lorenz's conclusions on sexual imprinting have been questioned because Guiton et al. found that you can learn to prefer mating with others.
  10. 10What did Harlow want to study? He wanted to study the effect of comfort in attachment
  11. 11What was the procedure of Harlow's study? He had 16 baby monkeys and gave them a choice between to wire monkeys. One with milk, and one covered in cloth.
  12. 12What were the findings of Harlow's study? The baby monkeys had a preference to the soft cloth monkey because they could cuddle it - especially when frightened.
  13. 13What did the results of Harlow's study show? They showed that contact comfort was more important than food when it comes to attachment.
  14. 14What is a strength of Harlow's study? We can apply it to real life and so it can help us prevent the risks associated with child abuse and neglect
  15. 15What is a limitation of Harlow's study? It is extremely unethical, and the monkeys suffered greatly.
