About Intellectual Property: General

GoConqr Original

What this unit covers

This unit collects material on intellectual property in general. Most of it is mind maps, and most of it is aimed at university level. The maps run through the main forms of protection: patents, copyright, trade marks, design rights and secret know-how. Several maps share the title Forms of Intellectual Property, so you can compare how different contributors organise the same ground.

Where to start

Begin with the Mind Map called Forms of Intellectual Property. It sets out each type of right in a few lines, including the definition of a patent as a legal title granted for an invention. Then open the Mind Map called Intellectual Property, which includes a December 2012 press release quoting Business Secretary Vince Cable on updating the framework.

Next, pick the right you need:

  • Copyright: the Mind Map called Copyright (CDPA 1988) and the Copyright flashcards, which cover moral rights, photo copyright, freelance contributions and remedies for breach.
  • Patents: the Mind Map called Patents [PA] and the flashcards What is a Patent.
  • Design rights: the Mind Map and flashcards both called Design Rights.

Confidence and organisations

The Confidential Information map looks at relationships of confidence, from spouses and friends to employers' secrets and state secrets. It also covers the common law rules and Coco v AN Clark. The flashcards on Breach of Confidence and Requirement 1 - Quality of Confidence follow the same thread. For the international side, several maps cover WIPO, including its structure under the Director General.

The IP Law note offers a different angle, starting from the US Constitution and the balance between creators and society.

Using quizzes and maps together

Read a map first, then take a quiz such as An Introduction to Intellectual Property or Module 1- Intellectual Property. Check which answers you missed and go back to the matching branch of the map. Flashcards such as Justifications for Intellectual Property help with the reasons behind the rules. Flowcharts, like the one on patent licence negotiation, show how ideas are used in practice.

Where it sits

This unit belongs to the Intellectual Property strand in Law (general and introduction). Open any resource that suits your course, take a quiz, and see which topic to revisit next.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with the Mind Map called Forms of Intellectual Property. It lays out patents, copyright, trade marks, design rights and secret know-how side by side. Once you know the main types, move to the map or flashcards for the one your course is focused on.

What do the mind maps cover?

The mind maps cover the forms of intellectual property, copyright including the CDPA 1988, patents, design rights, confidential information, exploitation of IP rights and the World Intellectual Property Organization. A few also cover moral rights and the reasons given for protecting IP.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users rather than by GoConqr itself, so it is worth checking them against your own course materials.

Who are these resources for?

Most of the material is at university level, so it suits university students learning the basics of IP law. Teachers can use the maps, flashcards and flowcharts as ready-made material. A smaller share suits secondary level.

Are there quizzes to test myself?

Yes, there are 9 quizzes on this page. Examples include An Introduction to Intellectual Property, Module 1- Intellectual Property and Intellectual Properties and Entertainment Contract Law. Use them after reading a map to see which topics need another look.

What if I can't find my topic?

Check the related titles first, as many maps repeat a topic under different names. If something is still missing, a free account lets you make your own mind maps, flashcards, quizzes and notes, and save your quiz scores as you go.
