About Internal Control

GoConqr Original

What this page covers

The unit sits in the Auditing and Assurance strand of Accounting and auditing. Much of it centres on COSO. The mind map on COSO (Comm.of Sponsoring Org. of the Treadway Commission) explains the five private sector bodies behind the framework and its aim of combating corporate fraud. The COSO flowchart lays out the components with a memory aid, and a COSO 2013 mind map is also listed.

Where to start

Begin with the big picture, then move to detail.

  1. Read the COSO mind map and the flowchart to see the components side by side.
  2. Go through the flashcards on COSO chapter 5 and Ramos, which ask what the control environment is, what its principles are and what tone at the top means.
  3. Move to Evaluation of the control environment, which covers the nature of internal control, methods, risk maturity and evaluating controls.

Beyond the framework

Several resources look at information systems. Control and Accounting Information Systems maps threats such as natural disasters, software errors and deliberate actions. The flashcards on processing integrity and availability controls cover files, storage and disaster recovery plans. Other maps and decks deal with fraud, cash controls and internal control weaknesses, plus a few that discuss research papers.

Using quizzes and maps together

Try a quiz cold first. Audit Test 2 asks who is responsible for control processes, and the quiz that starts with COSO monitoring steps tests a narrower point. For CIA candidates, there is a quiz labelled CIA Part 2 - SU 8.2. Note the questions you miss, then go back to the matching mind map and read that branch again. Finish by retaking the quiz.

Make it your own

Teachers can set a quiz or a map as a ready-made starter. If something is missing, you can build your own flashcards or maps from the ideas you found hardest.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with the COSO mind map, which sets out the framework and who created it. Then look at the COSO flowchart for the components in one view. After that, the flashcards on the control environment make a good next step before you try a quiz.

What do the mind maps cover?

They cover COSO and COSO 2013, the evaluation of the control environment, the elements and components of internal control, accounting information systems, fraud, cash controls and the internal audit function. Some are short outlines, while others break topics into many branches.

Are the resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself, so styles and depth vary from one resource to another.

Which exams or levels do these suit?

Most of the material suits university students, with a smaller share for professional candidates. One listed quiz is labelled CIA Part 2 - SU 8.2, and CIA is the only exam the listed resources mention. Teachers can use any of them as ready-made practice.

Is there anything on IT and systems controls?

Yes. Look for the mind map ITGC&ITAC, the flashcards on COSO IT and monitoring activities, and the deck on IT governance and general controls. They sit alongside the resources on accounting information systems and processing integrity.

What if I can't find my topic?

Check the related maps and flashcard decks first, since chapter-named decks often cover the same ideas under different titles. If your topic is still missing, a free account lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.
