About The Visual System and Visual Processing
GoConqr OriginalStart with the eye and perception
The resources on this page approach vision from several angles. The mind map Psychology: Perception introduces parts of the eye alongside rods and cones. Visual Perception brings together the physiology of vision, how we perceive, visual illusions and depth perception.
Start with either map to get an overview. As you read, note the terms you want to explore further, then return to the relevant branches when you meet them in a quiz or flashcard deck.
Follow the visual pathway
The Visual Pathway mind map follows the route from ganglion cells toward the lateral geniculate nucleus and the primary visual cortex. Use it after an overview of the eye to focus on how visual information moves toward the brain.
The notes on biopsychology also cover light as a stimulus, including wavelength, intensity and purity. Their discussion of hue and brightness gives you another way to connect the stimulus with visual perception.
Pair a quiz with a map
The quiz on our sense of sight asks about wavelength, brightness and color perception. Try it after reading a map or the biopsychology notes. Compare the questions with the material you have studied, and return to the map when a term needs another look.
Perception Final Exam Flashcards offers questions about light, wavelength, intensity and contrast. Use the cards alongside a map: the cards give you individual questions, while the map lets you see related ideas together.
Use the topic within the unit
The Visual System and Visual Processing is a section of Sensation, Perception and Attention in Psychology. These resources let you focus on vision within that unit, whether you are preparing for an exam or selecting material for teaching. Choose a resource that fits your starting point, then explore another format for a different view of the topic.
Frequently asked questions
Which resource is a good place to start?
For an overview, start with the Visual Perception mind map. It includes the physiology of vision, visual illusions and depth perception. If you want to focus on the eye first, Psychology: Perception introduces rods, cones and the cornea. You can then move on to Visual Pathway for a closer look at the route toward the brain.
What do the mind maps cover?
The maps offer several starting points. Visual Pathway follows visual information toward the lateral geniculate nucleus and primary visual cortex. Visual Perception includes the eye, photoreceptors, visual illusions and depth perception. Psychology: Perception discusses rods, cones and the cornea. Together, they let you study both the eye and aspects of perception.
Are these resources free to use?
Yes. Every resource listed on this page is free to open, study and take without an account. A free account can also save your quiz scores and let you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes. The listed resources were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr.
