About Site Operations, Plant and Health and Safety
GoConqr OriginalWhat this unit covers
This unit sits in the Building Construction Technology strand of Civil engineering and construction. It brings together material on running a building site safely: legal duties, plant and equipment, tools, and the work itself, such as excavation and demolition.
Health and safety first
Start with the mind maps on CDM Regulations 2015. They set out HSE guidance, including Managing Health & Safety in Construction (L153), and ask the basic question of what counts as construction work. Then move to the flashcard deck CDM Regs 2015 Roles and Duties, and the mind map Duties of Designers. Safety in Design is a good follow-up deck.
Site work and hazards
- The Excavation mind map lists hazards such as material falling onto people working in the excavation, people being struck by plant, and people and vehicles falling in.
- The Demolition mind map covers information, environmental points such as dust and vibration, structural testing and methods.
- The Demolition - Summary note says demolition should be planned and carried out by competent practitioners, and that mechanical equipment is favoured over hand demolition.
- Demolition Flashcards Week 7 asks about the four stages of demolition and the documents for each.
Plant, tools and equipment
For tools, try the decks Power Tools, drills, Tool ID, Bricklaying Tools and Concreting Tools and Equipment. Plant and Equipment - Large Power Machinery and the Selection of construction equipment mind map cover the bigger machines. The Slinger/Signaller Revision cards ask about spreader beams, lifting equipment and the value of a qualification or card.
Using quizzes and maps together
Read a mind map first to see the whole topic. Then take a quiz to test it. NCCER 00104-15 Introduction to Power Tools - Quiz 2 asks about circular saw guards, fine-bladed saws and angle grinders. NCCER Core Module 6 Review Questions and the term 1 mock test are also there. Wrong answers show you which map or deck to reopen.
Choose one topic today, open its map, and finish with a quiz.
Frequently asked questions
Which resource should I start with?
Start with the mind maps on CDM Regulations 2015, since they set out the legal framework and HSE guidance for construction work. Then try the CDM Regs 2015 Roles and Duties flashcards. Once that feels familiar, move on to the excavation or demolition maps and test yourself with a quiz.
What do the quizzes on this page cover?
There are four quizzes. NCCER 00104-15 Introduction to Power Tools - Quiz 2 covers saws, blade guards and angle grinders. NCCER Core Module 6 Review Questions, PPT 1 and a term 1 mock test for civil technology are also listed. They suit quick checks after reading a map.
Are the resources free to use?
Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.
Who are these resources for?
Most are aimed at university students and professional candidates, with some useful to teachers who want ready-made material. Learners can practise site safety duties, excavation and demolition hazards, and tool and plant identification, using the mix of maps, decks and quizzes.
What do the flashcard decks cover?
There are over 10 decks. They include tool sets such as Power Tools, drills and Bricklaying Tools, plus Slinger/Signaller Revision cards, Pipe and Excavation, Site Planning and Enabling Works, and Safety in Design. Each is short enough to review in one sitting.
What if I can't find the topic I need?
Try a nearby resource first, such as the Construction or Activity at construction site mind maps, which give a wider view. If the gap remains, you can build your own notes, flashcards or mind map on the topic and use them alongside what is listed.
