About Work Study and Ergonomics
GoConqr OriginalWhat the page covers
The page sits in the Work Methods and Continuous Improvement strand of Industrial engineering and quality. It brings together two linked ideas: how work is studied and measured, and how workplaces are designed around people.
On the work study side, the mind maps on Motion and time study talk about reducing and controlling costs, improving working conditions and motivating people, and note that the operator's safety must be considered. Other maps cover Steps of method study, WORK MEASUREMENT, METHODS ENGINEERING and Advantages of Standard Data. A work sampling flowchart is also included.
The ergonomics side
Several maps look at ergonomics and human factors as a discipline, including systems ergonomics, with ideas such as context, interactions, emergence and holism. There are also maps on Anthropometry, MENTAL LOAD AND ERGONOMICS and Human-machine interactions.
The slide sets go deeper. The workplace design set explains that a poor design places excessive demands on the user, and the alarm design set looks at how an alarm should alert an operator and allow time to respond.
Where to start
- Open the Work Design mind map for an overview of the efficiency, motivation and quality perspectives.
- Move to the motion and time study maps, then the method study steps.
- Read the workplace design slides, then the alarm design slides.
- Use the flashcard decks to check key terms.
Using quizzes and maps together
Read a map first, then take the Method study quiz without looking back. Note which questions went wrong, return to the matching branch of the map and try again. The IO Lecture 7 and 8 quiz gives you a second check, and teachers can use these in class or set them as revision tasks.
Every resource here is free to open and was made by GoConqr users. Choose one map, work through it, and see what you can add yourself.
Frequently asked questions
Which resource should I open first?
Start with the Work Design mind map. It sets out the efficiency, motivation and quality perspectives and links industrial engineering, method engineering, work measurement and ergonomics. After that, move to the motion and time study maps, then the steps of method study, before trying the Method study quiz.
What do the mind maps on this page cover?
Most of the page is mind maps. They cover motion and time study, method study, work measurement, standard data and the MTM methodology, plus ergonomics topics such as anthropometry, mental load, systems ergonomics and human-machine interactions. Some are short outlines, so compare a few on the same topic.
Are there quizzes to test myself?
Yes, there are 3 quizzes: Method study, IO Lecture 7 and 8, and HUMAN CHEESE FACTORY. Take one after reading the matching maps, note the questions you missed, and go back to those branches. The quizzes are free to take without an account.
Who are these resources for?
They are aimed mainly at university students studying work study, methods and ergonomics, with a small share of professional material. Teachers can also use the maps, slide sets and quizzes as ready-made material for lectures, seminars or revision tasks.
Are the resources free, and who made them?
Every resource listed is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. A free account also saves your quiz scores and lets you make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.
What if I can't find a topic I need?
Check the related maps first, as ideas like time study and ergonomics appear in several titles. If a topic is still missing, build your own mind map or flashcard deck on it, which also makes a good revision exercise.
