The working memory model
Fichas del conjunto (16)
- 1What is the working memory model used for?It is a model to show how the short-term memory is organised and how it functions
- 2What are the four components of the working memory model?* The central executive
* The phonological loop
* The Visuo-spatial sketchpad
* The episodic buffer - 3What is the central executive?The component of the working memory model which coordinates the 3 sub systems
- 4What are the characteristics and jobs of the central executive?* Limited capacity
* Monitors incoming data
* Allocates slave systems to tasks
* Makes decisions - 5What is the phonological loop?The phonological loop is the component of the working memory model which processes auditory information
- 6What are the characteristics of the phonological loop?* Coding is acoustic (due to being auditory data)
* Limited capacity
* Subdivided into two parts - The phonological store and the articulatory process - 7What are the jobs of the phonological store and the articulatory process?* The phonological store - stores auditory data we hear
* The articulatory process - allows maintenance rehearsal - 8What is the Visuo-spatial sketchpad?The component of the working memory model which processes visual and spatial information in the mental space often called the 'inner eye'
- 9What are the characteristics of the Visuo-spatial sketchpad?* Limited capacity - 3 or 4 objects (Baddeley)
Logie subdivided it into two parts - the inner scribe and the visual cache - 10What are the jobs of the inner scribe and the visual cache?* The inner scribe - Records the arrangement of objects in our visual field
* The visual cache - stores visual data - 11What is the episodic buffer?The component of the working memory model which brings all the information together and bridges it to the long-term memory
- 12What are the characteristics of the episodic buffer?* Limited capacity - usually 4 chunks (Baddeley)
- 13Which component is the newest?The episodic buffer
- 14When was the newest component added and who by?Baddeley in 2000
- 15What are 2 strengths of the working memory model?* Shallice and Warrington - KF suffered from amnesia after a motorcycle accident, they found that he struggled to process verbal information but could process visual information. This supports the idea that the verbal and visual information goes to two separate stores.
* Baddeley proved that participants couldn't do two verbal tasks at the same time but could do one verbal and one visual. This supports the idea that verbal and visual information goes to two separate slave systems as the two verbal tasks couldn't be completed due to the information fighting for the same slave system - 16What is one weakness of the working memory model?The central executive is the most important component but the least known, therefore it suggests that the working memory model hasn't been explained properly
