  1. 1Multi-Store ModelConsists of 3 memory stores; sensory memory, short-term memory and long-term memory.
  2. 2The Sensory Memory Store-Constantly receiving information
-Most of the information receives no attention
  3. 3Short-Term Memory StoreThe short term memory information will decay if not rehearsed.
  4. 4Long Term Memory StoreMaintains the initially rehearsed information that was received from the STM. Can store information for a potentially unlimited amount of time.
  5. 5Capacity, Duration and Encoding of STMCapacity- 7 +/- 2
    Duration- 18 seconds
    Encoding- Acoustic
  6. 6Capacity, Duration and Encoding of LTMCapacity- Potentially Unlimited
    Duration- Potentially Unlimited
    Encoding- Semantic
  7. 7One Strength of the Multi-Store Model, with example1) Evidence from brain damaged patients shows that we have a separate STM and LTM.
Example: 'KF' had a motor biking accident, and this damaged his STM but not his LTM.
  8. 8One Strength of the Multi-Store Model, with research evidence2) Research into the duration of STM made by Peterson and Peterson supports the multi-store model because they find that the STM only lasts for around 0-18 seconds.
  9. 9One Weakness of the Multi-Store Model1) The multi-store model suggests that we must rehearse information in our STM in order to transfer it into out LTM
    BUT
Example: We don't need to rehearse the alphabet or certain memories in order to remember them.
This suggests that rehearsal isn't as important as the model suggests.
  10. 10One Weakness of the Multi-Store Model, with evidenceThe model suggests that there is only one STM and one LTM. But when 'KF' was injured in an accident, it affected his STM but not his ability to deal with verbal information.
This suggests we have a separate verbal and visual LTM.
  11. 11What is a Flashbulb Memory? When a big event in the world is memorised and usually remembered.
    Example: 9/11
