- 1What is a strength of the multi-store model?There is supporting experimental research. Miller carried out a literature review into investigations into perception and the STM and found that the span of the short term memory is around 7 chunks, sometimes less and sometimes more. As well as this, Bahrick instructed 400 participants to recall the names and faces of their classmates. Those who had left school in the last 15 years recalled 90% of the names and those who left school in the last 48 years recalled 70% of the names, revealing that the LTM has a large duration. This means that the multi-store model makes valid suggestions about memory.
- 2What is a weakness of the research into the multi-store model?The studies are low in ecological validity, in research conducted by both Baddeley and Glanzer and Cunitz asked participants to recall words in a list and this is not reflective of how we use memory day to day. This means that the model is accepted as invalid as it may not be able to accurately explain memory in real life.
- 3What is another strength of the multi store model?There is supporting case study evidence. HM's amnesia was a result of surgery to alleviate the symptoms of his epilepsy. The surgery involved the removal of large parts of his temporal lobe in both hemispheres. The surgery was successful in alleviating the symptoms of his epilepsy but left him unable to recall old memories from his long term memory and create new long term memories. However, his STM was unaffected. This means the model is valid in claiming information must pass through stores in a linear fashion. It also shows that each store is unitary- if one is damaged then the other can function independently.
- 4What is another weakness of the multi-store model?There is contradictory case study evidence. KF suffered a motorbike accident and had severe brain damage. He was left with virtually no ability to form short term memories, but this only applied to verbal information- he could remember visual information. As well as this, Clive Wearing remembers little of his life from before 1985- he knows he has children from a previous marriage but can't remember their names and he greets his wife joyously every time they meet as if he hasn't seen her in years. Despite this, he still remembers how to play the piano and conduct orchestra. This means that some claims of the MSM may be invalid as the cases of CW and KF show that the STM and LTM may not actually be individual stores and may contain sub-components which are responsible for processing different types of information.
- 5What is a weakness of evidence into the multi-store model?Evidence from case studies lacks some of the core features of a science. Research on amnesiacs is rare and individual, which makes it impossible to reproduce. This means that the case studies are unlikely to be representative of how memory functions in the general population. Therefore, the multi-store model may not provide a reliable explanation of memory.
