  1. 1What was the name of the man who is a clinical case study who challenges MSM? And what year?Clive Wearing (1984)
  2. 2Explain the case study. (How he came to be a study, the effects of his condition)Contracted the herpes simplex virus which attacked his hippocampus , he now suffers from profound anterograde and retrograde amnesia.
He now lives in a 15-20 second bubble where he feels he has constantly woken up for the first time. He is unable to remember much of his past but able to walk, talk and play the piano. Knows he is married but cannot remember his wedding day.
  3. 3Define the difference between anterograde and retrograde amnesia.Retrograde- forgetting info and events before the incident/illness occurred.
Anterograde- inability to make new long term memories after an illness/incident.
  4. 4How does Clive Wearing support MSM?W's symptoms show that his STM is intact but not connected to his LTM, the link is simply broken in his case.
This supports the idea that STM and LTM are separate stores.
  5. 5How does Clive Wearing challenge MSM?He has some aspects of LTM which are intact but others are missing entirely.
He has good Procedural, poor semantic, very poor episodic.
MSM only claims there is one LTM. But W's case shows that LTM is not unitary but has 3 types.
  6. 6What are the three LTM types that researchers have subsequently suggested? Explain them.1. Episodic- memories for life events. They include detail and need to be deliberately accessed by the individual.
    2. Semantic- memories of factual info, includes what words mean, how to count and spell. (deliberately accessed)
    3. Procedural- for skills and actions, they allow us to do things. Are automatic rather than deliberate.
  7. 7What is a critique to this suggestion?Semantic memories are just collations of episodic memories. This suggests there are only 2 types:
    1. Declarative (episodic & semantic)
    2. Procedural
