  1. 1Who created the WMM? And in which year?Hitch and Baddeley (1974)
  2. 2Which part of the memory is the model concerned with and how does this model challenge MSM?Is an explanation for how one aspect of memory (STM) is organised and how it functions. Each component is qualitatively different, with different capacity and coding.
Challenges MSM because it suggests that STM is made up of four sub-components rather than being singular.
  3. 3Name the four sub-components. (don't describe)1. Central executive
    2. Visuo-spatial sketchpad
    3. Episodic buffer
    4. Phonological loop
  4. 4Draw the model.See folder.
  5. 5Describe the central executive. What is the function? What is the capacity? Coding? An attentional process that monitors incoming data, makes decisions and allocates tasks for the three slave systems.
    Has a limited processing capacity.
    Multi-faceted (all sensory modalities)
  6. 6What is the function of the phonological loop? Capacity? Coding?Deals with auditory information and preserves the order in which the information arrives. Is subdivided into:
    1. Phonological store- stores the words you HEAR.
    2. Articulatory process- allows maintenance rehearsal.
Capacity is two seconds worth of what you can say.
    Acoustic info
  7. 7What is the function of the visuo-spatial sketchpad? And its capacity? Coding?Stores visuo/spatial information when required. Logie (1995) divided it into two:
    1. Visual cache- stores visual data
    2. Inner scribe- records the ARRANGEMENT of objects in the visual field.
Baddeley suggested that it has a limited capacity, limited to three/four chunks.
    iconic info
  8. 8What is the function of the episodic buffer? Capacity? Coding?-Temporary store for information, maintains a sense of time sequencing (events/episodes), links working memory to LTM and wider cognitive processes e.g perception. Can be seen as the storage component of the CE.
    -Baddeley- limited to 4 chunks.
    -Multi-faceted, coded in all modalities.
  9. 9What study supports the WMM? Which part does it support?Baddeley's study- 'The word length effect' supports the idea of the phonological loop.
  10. 10Describe the aims, methods of this study.AIM- investigate the duration and capacity of pl.
METHOD- P's were asked to remember a list of five words for 1/2 second, the words varied in length. There were several conditions were administered for different word lengths (measured in syllables) from one to five s words.
  11. 11Describe the findings and conclusions.FINDINGS- P's remembered less words the longer the words were, more short words than long words were remembered.
C- PL has a limited time based capacity, means that not the number of items that determines capacity but the amount of time it takes to rehearse the items.
  12. 12What is the second study that supports WMM?The clinical case study of KF.
-STM was intact for visual tasks but he had difficulty completing auditory tasks, supports the idea that visual and auditory systems are separate. (suggested by WMM)
  13. 13What is a negative evaluation point for the WMM?Can argue that the WMM is not fully explained, e.g the CE's function needs to be more clearly specified rather than just 'attention', some psych's think it may consist of several components. Needs more clarity.
