- 1DEFINITIONA way of explaining behaviour that includes both direct and indirect reinforcement, combining learning theory with the role of cognitive factors.
- 2AO1 INTRODUCTIONSLT suggests that as well as direct reinforcement, we learn by observing others. Watching other people enable us to learn the specifics of aggressive behaviour: 1) the form it takes, 2) how often it is carried out, 3) the target it is directed at.
- 3AO1 OBSERVATIONChildren mostly learn aggressive behaviour through observation - watching role models and then imitating their behaviour.
- 4AO1 VICARIOUS REINFORCEMENT - (INDIRECT REINFORCEMENT)Children learn the consequences of aggressive behaviour by watching role models being punished or rewarded. By learning the consequences of aggressive behaviour, the child learns what is appropriate and what is not.
- 5AO1 MENTAL REPRESENTATIONBandura claimed that in order for social learning to take place, the child must form mental representations of events in their social environment. This sort of cognitive schema can be seen as a script telling the child when and how to be aggressive. They internalise these scripts and follow them throughout their lives.
- 6AO! MAINTENANCE THROUGH DIRECT EXPERIENCERewards reinforce behaviour. If a child successfully bullies another child, then the reward he gets from that bullying means he is likely to repeat aggressive behaviour.
- 7AO1 SELF-EFFICACY EXPENCTANCIESSelf-efficacy is the extent to which we believe our actions will achieve a desired goal. A child's confidence in their ability to be aggressive grows as they learn that aggression brings rewards.
- 8KEY RESEARCH - BANDURA ET AL (1961)Found that children in the aggressive condition who saw an adult model interacting aggressively with a bobo doll reproduced a lot of the aggressive behaviour they had seen the adult model carry out. Children in the non-aggressive group showed no aggression.
- 9AO3 WEAKNESS - LACK OF REALISMA doll is not a living person and does not retaliate when hit. This raises questions about whether these studies show us much about the imitation of aggressive behaviour towards other people.
- 10AO3 STRENGTH - EXPLAINING INCONSISTENCIES IN AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOURSLT can explain why an individual is aggressive in some situations and not others. It explains that the consequences of acting aggressively when with friends (reward) are different when acting aggressively at school (punishment).
- 11AO3 STRENGTH - CULTURAL DIFFERENCESSLT can explain cultural differences in aggression - the !Kung San of the Kalahari desert are very rarely aggressive due to their child-rearing practices (distraction from and avoidance of aggression). The absence of both direct reinforement and aggressive models means there is little opportunity or motivation for children to acquire aggressive behaviours.
