- Peasants = Most of population, taxes to government, interest to money lenders, and rent to land owners.
- Land owners = government protects them from villiage money lenders to maharajahs
- maharajahs = ruling princes who owned huge tracts of land
- Indians spoke many different languages
- Hindus = 1/4 of the population of India, but are the majority in the northwest and in East Bengal
