Encoding & Decoding Messages

1. Comm is the exchange of thoughts, info, or ideas that results in mutual understanding between 2 or more people

   • Requires at least 1 sender, 1 receiver, and a message that's transmitted within a communication medium
     • mediums: face-to-face convo, piece of artwork in a gallery, text message, any electronic transmission media
     • transmission mediums: oral, written, non-verbal, or electronic
   • 1. Begins with an idea/concept in the mind of the sender
     • 2. S/he encodes the idea into meaningful symbols in the form of words, pictures, or gestures (i.e. language)
       • 3. Sender selects a medium to transmit symbols so receiver can access them through 1 or more senses
         • 4. Receiver receives messages. S/he must decode the symbols to interpret the message & understand the intent of the sender
           • Meaningful communication takes place when the receiver accurately understands the message transmitted by the sender... but this does not always happen :-(
