LEVELS OF PROCESSING
Aim
- To see if the type of question asked about words will have an effect on the number of words recalled
Method
- Participants given a list of words to which they had to respond yes or no to
- Some q's required structural processing of the words, others required phonetic and the rest required semantic
- Then they were given a shorter list of words and asked to identify the words they had answered questions about
- Some q's required structural processing of the words, others required phonetic and the rest required semantic
- Participants given a list of words to which they had to respond yes or no to
Results
- Participants identified 70% of the words that required semantic processing
- 35% for phonetic processing
- 15% for structural processing
- Participants identified 70% of the words that required semantic processing
Conclusion
- The deeper information is stored, the more likely it is to be remembered
It does not explain why deeper levels of processing improve memory
- Lacks ecological validity as we do not go around remembering lists of words everyday
- We cannot apply it to real life situations
- Evaluation
- Lacks ecological validity as we do not go around remembering lists of words everyday
