Researching Pupils
Disadvantage
- Power and Status
- Children have less power, making it difficult to express their views. Especially if they challenge that of adults
- Teachers can use power to influence pupils that are selected for research
- Group interviews may reduce this issue but the power dynamic may still.
- Ability and Understanding
- Self expression, thinking and confidence likely to be limited
- Informed consent is difficult to obtain due to a lack of understanding
- Less developed memory may make it difficult to recall relevant detail
- Vulnerability and Ethical Issues
- Higher risk of psychological issues - the necessity of participation should be taken into account
- Young people need to consent alongside parents even if they don't easily understand
- There are more 'Gatekeepers' for vulnerable pupils.
- DBS checks may prevent sociologists from researching children
- Power and Status
Advantage
- Pupils are legally required to attend school so the target research groups are easy to locate.
