Researching Pupils

  1. Disadvantage

    • Power and Status
      • Children have less power, making it difficult to express their views. Especially if they challenge that of adults
      • Teachers can use power to influence pupils that are selected for research
      • Group interviews may reduce this issue but the power dynamic may still.
    • Ability and Understanding
      • Self expression, thinking and confidence likely to be limited
      • Informed consent is difficult to obtain due to a lack of understanding
      • Less developed memory may make it difficult to recall relevant detail
    • Vulnerability and Ethical Issues
      • Higher risk of psychological issues - the necessity of participation should be taken into account
      • Young people need to consent alongside parents even if they don't easily understand
      • There are more 'Gatekeepers' for vulnerable pupils.
      • DBS checks may prevent sociologists from researching children
  2. Advantage

    • Pupils are legally required to attend school so the target research groups are easy to locate.
