availability problems
- data no longer stored in the brain forgotten forever
- long term
- data no longer stored in the brain forgotten forever
accessibility problems
- cannot retrieve until cues are accessable
- short term
- cannot retrieve until cues are accessable
reconstructive theory
- concerned with what happens when information is stored and retrieved from memory
- memory is not like a tape recorder, where we mentally play back events and recall them exactly the way they happened
- its more like an imaginary reconstruction of past events influenced by our attitudes and are responses to the events
schema
- where we have gaps in our memory so we use fake information to fill in the gaps based on what would normally happen
- e.g- might of gone on a picnic with bob and sue but you cant remember you went with them so you say you went with your family
confabulation
- when you lie but you think that actually happened so its honest lying
misinformation
- peoples memorys are changed due to the information that is given after the event and it chages there mind
leading questions
- questions that contain information previously known to the witness and makes them want to answer differently
distortion
- when things change
criticisms of the reconstructive theory
- not scientific enough- describes memory but doesn't describe it - eg how confabulation works
- open to demand characteristics- might have guessed the aim and changed the story because of what you got told- Bartlett's war of ghost story
- being subjective in his research- he might of decided participants were all confabulation
