- 1The Processes of MemoryEncoding - the way in which 'memory trace' is created.
Storage - memories are stored in our brains for varying lengths of time.
Retrieval - memories need to be 'accessed' from storage in order for us t0 recall information. - 2Types of memory: sensory memoryInitial contact for stimuli. SM is only capable of retaining information for a very short time.
- 3Types of memory: Short term memoryinformation we are currently aware of or thinking about. Comes from paying attention to sensory memories.
- 4Types of Memory: Long term memoryContinual storage of information which is largely outside of our awareness, but can be called into working memory when needed.
- 5CAPACITYHow much you can remember
- 6DURATIONHow long you remember something for.
- 7Capacity and duration of the short term memoryCAPACITY : 7+2/-2
DURATION : Very brief.
STM is only a temporary store. If needed for longer it will be transferred into the LTM by 'rehearsal'. - 8TYPES OF LONG TERM MEMORY: Episodic memoryThis is your life story.
Contains information that is only relevant to you.
Retains personal information. - 9TYPES OF MEMORY: Semantic memoryMemory for knowledge and facts about the world around you.
Not personal to you. - 10TYPES OF MEMORY: Procedural memoryMemory for automatic processes, such as walking, brushing our teeth etc...
- 11ENCODINGHow we change information so that we can then store it in our memory via our senses.
- 12ENCODING IN THE SHORT TERM AND LONG TERM MEMORYWe can encode:
Visual encoding - pictures/images
Acoustic encoding - sounds
Semantic encoding - meaning
