Flashcards
Operations Management-8
Cards in this deck (7)
- 1Describe improvementImprovement is a process which is 'A sequence of dependent events involving time, which has a valued results for the eventual end user'
- 2Describe processesSelected portions of a larger stream of activities and can be:
-transformational: input to output
-transactional: output to input - 3what are the 3 key features of a process and describe them?1) Dependency- it is sequential with knock-on effects, process a neds to be finished before process b
2) Variability-the fixed, known and expected can become 'variable, unknown and unexpected-a process changes from a state of certaınty to uncertainty.' Parts of a process with variability has knock-on effect and can be catastrophic
3) Interface - potential friction points between processes and are often ignored, as out minds concentrate on the 'box' and what happens only there. Dependencies can exist in/at the interfaces between processes. - 4What is process mapping?Breaks a process down into component parts/process and providing a structure for data.
Acts as a lens through which to view the process and to focus the efforts on making improvements.
Evidence suggests that firms don't actually fully work the way management thinks they do. - 5What are the 5 basic steps in process mapping?-Define the supply chain.
-Identify the steps by brainstorming
-Display the process in sequence
-Change the map to correspond to the actual physical process
-Evaluate the process by questioning - 6What are the advantages of process mapping?-Identify waste
-Identify communication issues
-Identify all people involved in a task
-Show complexity
-Explain the whole process to a group
-Who should be on your project?
-Minimum result is reduction in lead time - 7How to address process gaps? and what are the key terms?-Potential for improvement needs to be recognised before any improvement can take place.
-Losses in potential plant output must be logged.
-Linking this system to the overall plant control stem will minimise the data entry requirements and opportunities for error.
*-Chronic losses vs sporadic losses
*-Failure mode & effects analysis
*-oot cause analysis
*-Reliability centred maintenance
*-Condition based monitoring
*-Avoid reactive maintenance
