Hypotheses and samples

Livvy Allen Psychology GCSE English 18 cards

Cards in this deck (18)

  1. 1What is a null hypothesis?A testable statement saying that any difference or correlation is due to chance
  2. 2What is an alternative hypothesis?A testable statement predicting that there will be a relationship between variables
  3. 3What is a two-tailed (non-directional hypothesis)?A statement predicting that one variable will be related to another
  4. 4What is a one-tailed (directional) hypothesis?A statement predicting the direction of a relationship between variables
  5. 5What is a target population? The group from which a sample is drawn
  6. 6What is a sample?A group of people selected from a target population as representatives
  7. 7What is random sampling? Each member of the population has an equal chance of being chosen
  8. 8Name an advantage of random samplingRepresentative as all types of people in the population have an equal chance of being chosen
  9. 9Name a disadvantage of random samplingHard to ensure everyone is likely to be chosen as sample may be biased, e.g. more girls than boys
  10. 10What is snowball sampling? From a very small number of participants, more are contacted through the initial group
  11. 11Name 2 advantages of snowball sampling- Relatively easy because the researcher only has to find the first few pp's
    - A convenient way to find a sample of a particular type of participant (especially if your population is not easy to contact)
  12. 12Name a disadvantage of snowball samplingNon-representative as pp's are likely to be similar in ways other than any common characteristics needed for the study
  13. 13What is opportunity sampling?Participants are chosen because they are readily available
  14. 14Name an advantage of opportunity samplingQuick and easy
  15. 15Name a disadvantage of opportunity samplingNon-representative as the kinds of people available are likely to be limited and therefore similar
  16. 16What is self-selecting sampling?Participants are invited to participate, e.g. through advertisements, and those who reply become the sample
  17. 17Name an advantage of self-selecting samplingRelatively easy because the participants come to you and are committed
  18. 18Name a disadvantage of self-selecting samplingNon-representative as the kinds of people who respond to requests are likely to be similar, e.g. have free time
