reliability and validity

maia haley Psychology A level English 14 cards

Cards in this deck (14)

  1. 1Reliabilitymeasure variables consistently
  2. 2External Reliabilityalways produce the same results in the same situation with the same people
    controls
  3. 3test- retestin a reliable self report the same person would give the same assessment. This is test-retest assessment.
If same person responds in the same way twice in a similar way, there is external reliability
  4. 4Internal reliabilityabout the consistency of items within the measures itself
shows that items within the self report tool are measuring the same phenomenon
  5. 5split half assessmentmeasure internal reliability in which scores from two halves of a test are compared. for example: a questionnaire testing extraversion might contain 20 questions. if scores from the first half of these are correlated with the scores from the second half, the measure has good reliability
  6. 6inter-rater reliabilityto maintain high reliability, researchers must interview in standardised ways and interpret the response to open questions consistently- inter-rater reliability
it is checked by each researcher assessing the same self reports and then correlating their finding. if there is a positive correlation the researchers are reliable.
  7. 7Validitythe extent to which a technique is capable of achieving the intended purpose.
  8. 8internal validityrefers to the test or measure being used: for example- in an experiment, whether changes in the DV are caused by the IV rather then sources of error
  9. 9face validitywhether a measure appears, at face value to test what it claims
  10. 10criterion validityindicates whether a phenomenon measured in one way will relate to, or predict, some other related variable
  11. 11concurrent validitywhether a measure will produce a similar score for a particular individual as another test that claims to assess the same phenomenon. this can be assessed by comparing the results to a measure known to be effective.
  12. 12construct validitylooking at whether a measure is based on some certain to exist phenomenon, which it tests.
  13. 13external validityissues beyond the investigation, particularly whether findings will be generalizable to other populations, location, contexts and times.
    Ecological validity
  14. 14population validitythe extent to which findings from one sample can be generalised to the whole population from which the sample was taken
