Astronomy 1030
Cards in this deck (24)
- 1What is a constellation?A pattern of stars that's been given a name. Many named by ancient Greeks and Romans.
- 2WHat is a modern constellation? One of 88 designated regions in the sky.
- 3Who is responsible for naming constellations today? The International Astronomical Union
- 4What is an asterism?Unofficial constellations that are either part of larger constellations or make up parts of multiple constellations, such as the Big Dipper, which is part of Ursa Minor
- 5What is the Celestial Sphere? How the sky appears to be a sphere around the Earth onto which stars appear to be stuck.
- 6What is the Celestial Equator? The projection of Earth's equator onto the Celestial Sphere.
- 7What are the Celestial Poles? The projection of Earth's Poles onto the Celestial Sphere
- 8What is the Greek star magnitude system?Brightest stars were at 1 magnitude, and the dimmest stars were at 10 magnitude
- 9What is the modern magnitude system?Brightest stars are less than 1 magnitude indefinitely, and vice versa
- 10What is the highest magnitude celestial body the naked eye can see?6
- 11What is altitude?Angle above the horizon.
- 12What is azimuth angle?Angle of a star looking down clockwise from the north.
- 13How does time affect altitude and azimuth for stars?it changes throughout the night.
- 14What is right ascension and declination?A coordinate system that is unaffected by Earth's rotation.
- 15What is declination?Projection of latitude onto the celestial sphere.
- 16What is scension? The projection of Earth's longitude onto the Celestial Sphere
- 17How is ascension measured?Measured in degrees. Each degree is divided into 60 minutes, which are divided into 60 seconds. 360 degrees is divided into 24 hours.
- 18What is angular size? The angle an object subtends when you look at it. Measured in degrees, minutes, and seconds.
- 19What is the smallest angular size the naked eye can see?1' (1 arcminute)
- 20How long does the moon take to orbit the Earth?About 30 days.
- 21What is the eliptic? The path the sun traces along the celestial equator.
- 22What is an equinox? When the sun passes the celestial equator.
- 23What is parallax?Apparent change in an object's position due to change in viewing angle.
- 24What is retrograde motion? When planets appear to move int he wrong way.
