- 51817James Mill was a Scottish economist and philosopher. He published the book 'A History of British India'.
- 6What are the events recorded in history books?-Earlier, history books spoke mainly of battles and wars, rulers and their policies, and events that have had a significant impact on the society.
-They duly noted the major events in a ruler's life like his birth, heritage, coronation, marriage, death, succession and so on.
-Events such as these have determined dates and in such historical accounts, dates are quite debatable.
-Now historians write about a variety of issues such as how people earned their livelihood, what they produced and ate, how towns and communities developed and so on. - 7Why and where did the British preserve official documents?-Historical accounts of the British are one of the most important sources for the study of British India.
-British considered the act of writing quite prestigious as they believed that this would help in the conservation, analysation and organisation of instructions, policies, documents etc. so that things could be debated and discussed properly.
-This resulted into the administrative culture of memoirs, writings and records.
-In order to preserve these the British built record rooms next to administrative institutions such as the village tehsildar's office, the collectorate, the commissioner's office etc.
-Archives and museums were too built for the same purpose. - 8Why do the historians divide the past into different ages? They do so in order to capture the various characteristics of each period and group them into significant divisions.
-It helps them study historical accounts and derive conclusions in an organised manner.
-As a result the terms through which they demarcate ages become important. Eg: economic changes, cultural and religious influences etc. - 9Who was James Mill?James Mill was a Scottish economist and philosopher who published the book-"A History of British India"
-Here, he periodises Indian history as 'Hindu', 'Muslim', and 'British'.
-This periodisation is faulty as it did not take into consideration other factors such as economic development, social progress etc. - 10Why do historians refer to modern history as colonial?-Science, reason, democracy, equality and liberty are the forces of modernity.
-Equality, liberty and democracy did not exist under British rule.
-Neither was the period one of economic growth and liberty.
-Historians, hence, refer to modern history as colonial.
-The way in which the British conquered the country and established their rule was mainly through trade, hence, subjugating local nawabs and rajas.
-They established control over the economy and society, collected revenue to meet their expenses, brought goods at lower prices, produced crops for export etc. Changes in cultural and administrative policies were sequential. - 11Why did James Mill divide Indian history into Hindu, Muslim, and British?-Mill believed that all Asian societies were less civilised than those of Europe.
-According to his historical accounts, Hindu and Muslim despots ruled the country.
-Religious intolerance, social and religious taboos etc. dominated the Indian social life.
-Mill says that they could civilise India by introducing European manners, practices, cultures etc.
-Mill suggested that they should capture all Indian territories for the joy and happiness of the Indian people as, according to him, India could not have progressed without British help.
-Thus, he periodised in such a manner to depict the darkness of Indian life before British rule.
